General Inspections

You should check your guinea pig on a routine basis. You would be looking for any of the following signs of ill health:

dry or brittle fur (stress),
large calluses on the foot pads (bumblefoot),
bald patches with scabs or rough skin (mites or fungus),
small grey/brown bugs crawling around on their skin (lice),
small white or grey bumps in bald patches (mites),
slobbering, drooling, poor eating habits (teeth problems),
Blood in urine (kidney or bladder stones),
Lumps under the skin (abscess, tumor).

As you become more confident in the care of your animal, you will recognize what problems you can handle yourself and which you need a vet's assistance with.

REMEMBER, A GUINEA PIG WILL HIDE THE FACT THAT IT IS SICK FOR AS LONG AS IT CAN!
