Dental Problems

"One of the most common injuries to a guinea pig is incisor tooth damage. This usually happens from them being dropped by their owners or leaping out of their hands as they are lowered back into their cages."

-----D----- Empty Diet

Post  Admin Tue Mar 17, 2009 4:31 am

#1
"Sick guinea pig must get their supply of vitamin C, even though they are having to be syringe fed, see NURSING. You can put a small portion of a vitamin C Redoxen tablet in the food and mix it.

The need for lots and lots of hay, is the secondary most important dietary need. Guinea pigs are herbivores, and they are grazing animals.

Guinea pigs, like all herbivores, have constantly growing teeth. Making guinea pigs work to get their food will save some dental problems in the future."

FOR MORE INFORMATION -- http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/dietaryneeds.htm

#2
"Guinea pigs, cannot produce vitamin C and so they have to have it supplemented in their diet. (See Vitamin C) This is the most critical factor in the health of your pet."

-----D----- Empty DANGEROUS MEDICATIONS

Post  Admin Fri Mar 27, 2009 1:27 am

"While all antibiotics will affect the gut flora of a guinea pig, some are deadly and can cause a fatal enterotoxemia.

All penicillin based drugs are toxic to pigs! Amoxicillin (Clavamox) is one that is frequently and mistakenly prescribed by unknowledgeable vets.

Avoid these medications and their derivatives:

amoxicillin (Clavamox)
ampicillin
bacitracin
cefadroxil
cephalexin * (derivative: Cefadroxil)
cephalosporins
cephazolin
chlortetracycline
clindamycin
dihydrostreptomycin
erythromycin
lincomycin
oxytetracycline
penicillin
streptomycin"
