Some information on what goes on on the inside of your guinea pig!
- Guinea pig stomaches have the capacity to hold about two thirds to one whole ounce.
- Guinea pig have no tails but actually have 6 caudal vertebrae which is commonly associated with tails!
- Guinea pig molars grow constantly at a rate of 1/16 of an inch a week.
- Veggie matter is broken down by microorganisms in the intestines and then eliminated in a soft form in which the guinea pigs eat. The matter makes a second trip through the body and the results are solid. These poos are called cecotropes also known as cecal poops.
- Upper and lower jaws consist of the same amount of teeth, two incisors, two premolars, 6 molars, and no canines.
- Weigh around 800 to 1000 grams or 1.75 to 2.25 pounds.
- Heart weighs around 1/16 of an ounce.
- Heart beats 230 to 380 per minute, and doubles when stressed.
- Guinea pigs are between plantigrades (walk on soles of feet) and digitigrades (walk on toes).
- Guinea pig cannot judge depth very well because of their eyes being set to the side.
- Guinea pig eyes contain two types of cones in the retina, one that sees and comprehends green and the other, red.
- Guinea pig have paranormic vision which means that they can see 340 degrees sround themselves.
- Guinea pigs can differencate 33 images per second which means that TV shows and movies are just flickering images to them.
- Guinea pigs normal body temp. is 100 to 103.5 F or approx. 37.8 to 39.7 C.
