ADOPTING A GUINEA PIG

Sometimes people don't know that a small animal rescue shelter is near them, or sometimes their local SPCA shelter has guinea pigs avaliable for adoption also.

Animal rescues generally know the animal's background, personality, & sometimes their medical history. In rescue shelters they are socialized, correctly sexed, and alot healthier than pet stores.

THE HEARTBREAKING PATTERN

Rescue shelters, along with many animal activists are helping to end this horrible cycle. So why rescue guinea pigs?

--Because backyard breeders feel that there is a demand for breeding these animals. They take poor care of them, and do not give them the proper medical attention, among other horrible conditions. Until the animals are finally sold to pet stores.

--Pet stores do not know how to properly take care of these delicate little creatures. So they are sold to the public sick, and NOT correctly sexed.

--People are bringing home guinea pigs that have unexpected pregnancies, and who are also sick. When some of these animals can no longer be taken care of, they're sometimes surrendered to a rescue shelter.

--So if we skip the pet stores, and go directly to adopting guinea pigs from a rescue shelter, then the backyard breeders would no longer be making money. This would force the backyard breeders to stop breeding guinea pigs.

THIS IS OUR GOAL! PLEASE HELP END THIS HORRIBLE PATTERN!

CHOOSE TO ADOPT!

CAVY GALORE

Cavy Galore is a website forum that is dedicated to learning about guinea pigs. We are a rescue friendly forum, and we are absolutely against the breeding of guinea pigs. We also prefer to adopt our guinea pigs from a rescue shelter, rather than purchasing from a pet store.

We treat each other with dignity, and respect. We share photos & stories of our guinea pigs. We offer support & advice based on our experiences with guinea pigs, and above all we have fun! We encourage others to learn, and take proper care of these delicate little animals as well.

Our members are: friendly, young adults, older adults, men, and also women. We offer a live chat room, games, contests, and we also share stories, & photos of our other pets as well.

If you do NOT breed guinea pigs, then we invite you to come & have a look around. It is ABSOLUTELY free to join our foum. There is no monthly fee, and you can quit at any time. So if this is oemthing that sounds interesting to you, please feel free to drop in at "CAVY GALORE". Here's our link - http://www.cavygalore.proboards.com/index.cgi

GUINEA PIG QUIZ --THE ANSWERS!

1. Two male guinea pigs can live in one cage together?
--TRUE. If it is a large enough c&c cage that is approx. 13.5 sq. feet. They can get along.
2. Guinea pigs do not eat hay?
--FALSE. They need UNLIMITED hay 24/7! They hay helps keep their teeth from over growing, and aids in digestion also.
3. Guinea pigs love being in direct sunlight?
--FALSE. They do not sweat, & they do not pant like dogs do. So gp's have no way of reducing their body temperature. This makes it easy for them to have a heat stroke.
4. Guinea pigs love fresh vegetables?
--TRUE. They need a variety of fresh vegetables every day. To make sure that they're getting their dialy intake of vitamin C.
5. The best place to get a guinea pig from is a pet store?
--FALSE. Pet stores do not know how to properly take care of guinea pigs. The best place to get one is to adopt from a rescue shelter.
6. Exercise balls are harmful to guinea pigs?
--TRUE. The exercise ball is unfortunately marketed for guinea pigs, but it is harmful to their spines.
7. Guinea pigs need a cage that is larger than a pet store cage?
--TRUE. Guinea pigs need space to run around, popcorn, and play. A pet store cage does not give them the room to do this.
8. Guinea pigs teeth do not grow?
--FALSE. Their teeth are constantly growing. They need the chewing action that hay provides to keep their teeth trimmed down.
9. Cedar wood shavings are not a good bedding to use for your guinea pig's cage?
--TRUE. Cedar bedding has strong odors to it, which could cause respiratory problems for your guinea pig. The best source for bedding is aspen, kiln dried pine, or fleece. Just to name a few.
